A dental assistant’s career is worth looking into if you’re in to oral hygiene. Dental assistants are extremely well compensated in the dental clinics because they are able to provide services that the dentists need to stay organized and be on top of their game. In healthcare, the benefits of many assistant jobs lie in job satisfaction. As a dental assistant, you will be faced with many challenges related to dealing with the different personalities of patients as well as your colleagues. Another challenge that dental assistants constantly have to face is staying organized enough so that the dentist manages to stay focused on all his patients so he can take care of more patients. You need to be extremely patient and have good interpersonal skills. Dental assistants need to be good at adapting to different situations as well as there job requires them to learn from the dentist’s preference on handling patients with varied oral conditions.

People who want to enter in this career path can choose t undergo informal or formal education. Most dental assistants in the states do not require formal education in order to be hired for clerical duties. However, the salary for these dental assistants is quite limited and there is little if not, no room for growth in their career. These on-site trained assistants need street smarts as everything in the dentist’s office is alien to them. They may also have a hard time adapting and memorizing all the tiny details that the dentist wants done in his office. On the positive side, these informally trained dental assistants can still opt to be formally trained in the future. Informally trained dental assistants also have the advantage of being able to work as soon as they graduate from college.

Formal training to become a dentist assistant is more attractive for many aspirants. Aside from being able to earn a respectable dental assistant salary of $30,000 a year, formally trained dental assistants can even work for many institutions including schools, clinics, and health centers. The demand for them in public institutions is quite high as well.  Dental assistant training schools can be found in community colleges, vocational schools, and technical institutes.

In order to enroll, one must have a high school diploma or equivalent to prove that they are worthy of being trained. Students who have a passion for anything related to science will pass the subjects they take with flying colors. In the classroom setting, students are offered laboratory exercises as well as theoretical lessons on anything related to dentistry. Many times, looking for a dental assisting training program can be quite challenging. The school you need to look for must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Entering a school with the right accreditation form the CODA as well as the American Dental Association (ADA) is important since graduating from schools with proper accreditation means you can apply for a state licensee exam to become a dental assistant. Different states have different licensing requirements, but they all require that a student be enrolled in an accredited school in order to be considered.
