Certificate of EMT – Basic
Students will learn how to apply first aid remedies for injuries. They would learn how to manage trauma, cardiac, and respiratory emergencies. They would assess the patient’s vital signs and report the status. Schools may provide hands on training in ambulatory or emergency care. Students will also be taught on how to use emergency equipments such as stretchers, splints, suction, backboard and other tools. They would also learn how to stabilize fractures, airway obstruction, and manage bleeding. Some schools equipped EMT’s with the knowledge of delivering babies. These are some of the skills could be acquired in this level.
Certificate of EMT – Intermediate
Covered in this level are advance emergency care and knowledge. Students obtain the knowledge in using advance tools such as airway devices, IV fluids and applying certain medications. They would handle coursework in patient assessment, ventilation management and IV therapy.
Certificate of EMT- Paramedic
This is the most advance level for an EMT. This is usually offered as an associate’s degree program from colleges or technical schools. Students acquire the knowledge in anatomy, human structure, and physiology. They also obtain the knowledge in certain procedures such as EKG’ and performing endotracheal intubations. Students should possessed extensive experience in ambulatory or other emergency facilities. They should have mastered the latter levels before pursuing a paramedic certification. This would ensure optimum and maximum performance during emergencies.
